Creation to the Greeks, Week 20

This week was a mess of winter weather!  We continued to have school amidst the ice, snow, and rain - much to the chagrin of my students - but we got more ice than snow, so it wasn't that fun to play in.  :)  Most of our activities were canceled in the evenings and we stayed in for about three days, but we did not have the extreme weather of other areas more north of us that are still covered in snow. 
This week we read The Trojan Horse: How the Greeks Won the War by Emily Little and it was a great, short story of the Iliad in an easy reader.  It was a good introduction to the epic tales of the Iliad and the Odyssey and then we began reading The Children's Homer: The Adventures of Odysseus and the Tale of Troy by Padraic Colum which will take several weeks, but will be a more in-depth re-telling of these stories.  We are still catching up and finishing Treasures of the Snow, also, and should finish reading it soon. 
We also did a really fun experiment about squids from Genesis For Kids. It involved filling up long, twistable balloons with water and tying them off. We carried them up to a partially filled bathtub, then cut off the end while holding the balloon under water and letting it go.  They really squirmed around and we had fun seeing what kind of pressure made them "shoot" under the water!

 
On Friday we had a fun 4H meeting with some other homeschooling friends.  We enjoy this club because it is a smaller group and we can be flexible with what we do.  We meet monthly and during this meeting we brought projects to work on.  The boys all worked on Lego projects and the girls worked on a scrapbook for the club.  They enjoyed doing that together!
