Getting back to school after a long vacation is difficult! This whole week I have been trying to get the children out of bed at their "normal" time and one of them is still not adjusted back to our time zone! Still, we did accomplish some things this week. We just had a few more things left unfinished, which drives me crazy!
We began moving from our study of Egypt to our study of Greece. We have enjoyed learning about Egyptian history, but it will be nice to have a change. We talked about the early people of Crete, the Minoans and began an art project like the fresco paintings from their era from our Artistic Pursuits curriculum. We also discussed Ruth and Samuel from the Old Testament for our Bible History. We got back to some reading, spelling, handwriting, math, and English. We are also trying to get back to our good habits of practicing our musical instruments.
We didn't get all of our science experiments done, but we did this one about potatoes and we weren't really able to tell if it worked. We boiled one potato and did not boil another. Then, cut the potatoes in half and place them in about an inch of water in a bowl and put 1 tsp. salt in both of them. The salt was supposed to dissolve into the one that was not cooked because it's cells were not "dead" from being cooked. However, it looked to us like our salt dissolved more into the cooked potato because it held water from the bowl. Anyway, we tried it.
B began working on an art project on Friday for the Jr. Duck Stamp art contest. She also did this last year and won 2nd place in the state competition. We will be showing you more of that in the future. Both kids are excited to play in their first basketball games this Saturday! They had to miss the first two games while we were away on our vacation. It should be an exciting day!
We also celebrated our 100th day of school! The kids were excited to complete their 100 charts and B and I read a book "Counting with Cheerios to 100". We used cheerios for part of it, up until about the number 30. Then we decided that it was too many cheerios to get them all out and we just read the book. We also did 100 exercises - as a combined team effort. Now that both children are adding numbers in the 1,000's and 10,000's it seemed like we just didn't do as much to celebrate, but we always recognize the day and it helps me to know that we are more than halfway done with our school year!
I forgot to post my Thankful Thursday, but this week we were thankful for being back home. We had a GREAT trip, but home is really nice, too! I think when B said she is thankful for "the world" she was feeling inclusive and did not want to leave anyone or anything out. :)
